Indigenous leader Marcos Veron at the recovery of the Guarani-Kaiowas traditional territory Sucuriy, at Maracaju city, Mato Grosso do Sul State in Mid-west Brazil, May 1997. Veron was assassinated less than six years later, in January 2003. The indians face the armed authority of the farmers and long judicial battles for the demarcation and permanence in their lands.
