Researchers with the LBA measure levels of carbon in vegetation. Ilha do Bananal, Amazon rainforest, Brazil. LBA is the acronym for Large-Scale-Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment, whose mission is to identify the particular functionality of the Amazonian biome, its capability for self regulation and its influence on other regions of South America from the point of view of control of hydro resources, maintanance of forest ecosystems, carbon-cycle regulation and interaction with the atmospheric climate. Ultimately LBA should be able to predict the ecosystem´s sustainability issues against the scenario of human occupation and global climatic changes.
