Brazilian writer Jorge Amado (August 10, 1912 - August 6, 2001) and his wife Zelia Gatai in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, photographed in 2001, few months before his death. He was the best-known of modern Brazilian writers, his work having been translated into some 30 languages and popularized in film. His work dealt largely with the poor urban black and mulatto communities of Bahia.
