Morro de Bom Jesus da Lapa (The hill of Bom Jesus), an imposing limestone massif, ninety metres high, cut inside into galleries and caves, that naturally have "church-like" structures so was converted to a chapel. The chapel began in the seventeenth century and is a significant pilgrimage site in Brazil. The city is home to the third largest Catholic festival of the country, known as the Romaria (Portuguese for "Procession" or "Pilgrimage") of Bom Jesus drawing as many as 800,000 visitors or "Romeiros" to the city annually. The cliff carries within it the common vegetation of the drought-stricken region. The hill looks like a patch of limestone mountain, isolated in the middle of a plain, the edge crowned with cacti, thorn bromeliads and minarets of various shapes.
