Spent fuel pool nuclear power plant_rb1174.jpg
Inside the Angra II Nuclear Power Plant’s spent fuel pool at the Central Nuclear Almirante Álvaro Alberto complex in Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Every 12–24 months, approximately 25–33% of a reactor’s fuel assemblies are discharged into this deep, water-filled pool, where continuous cooling and radiation shielding allow the intensely hot, radioactive rods to decay safely before further handling or storage.
