Folia de Reis Penitentes ( a kind of Epiphany Festival ) a journey in the alleys of Favela Santa Marta during the celebration of Sao Sebastiao day ( January 20th ), patron saint of Rio de Janeiro city. Since 2008 Santa Marta has a Pacifying Police Unit ( Unidade de Polícia Pacificadora, also translated as Police Pacification Unit ), abbreviated UPP, a law enforcement and social services program which aims at reclaiming territories, more commonly favelas, controlled by gangs of drug dealers.
