Separation barrier Rio favela_12rf00131.jpg
Complexo da Mare, a massive network of favelas that sits alongside the Linha Vermelha ( Red Line ), the main highway from the Rio de Janeiro international airport to the city centre - since 2010 the community has been fenced off from the highway by huge Perspex panels - a 3-metre-high, 7 km stretch separation barrier decorated with graffit (on this picture a representation of Rio mountains, an angel and the urban violence) - authorities claim it provides an acoustic barrier, locals describe it as a “wall of shame”, another way of hiding poor people.
