Rio de Janeiro favela_rd0050.jpg
A Gondola lift built by the Leitner-Poma group, popularly called "Bondinho do Alemao", spans the favela Complexo do Alemao allowing residents a faster commute – it is the first mass transit aerial lift passenger system in Brazil that is integrated into the urban rail transport system and became a popular destination for foreign tourists on the weekend. Since 2012 the place has operations of the Pacifying Police Unit ( Unidade de Polícia Pacificadora, also translated as Police Pacification Unit ), abbreviated UPP, a law enforcement and social services program which aims at reclaiming territories, more commonly favelas, controlled by gangs of drug dealers.
