The Guanabara Bay is usually the first Rio de Janeiro postcard one sees when gets to the city by plane. The two airports are located on its shores. A wonderful view from a distance and above. When you get closer the landscape changes a lot. The bay's once rich and diversified ecosystem has suffered extensive damage in recent decades, particularly along its mangrove areas and has been heavily impacted by urbanization, deforestation and pollution of its waters with sewage, garbage and oil spills. From the mid- 1990s it has been the subject of one of the largest environmental restoration projects, with funding from the IDB and the Government of Japan, with little improvement yet.
