Lencois Maranhenses Natinoal Park in Maranhão State, northeastern Brazil. Composed of large, white, sweeping dunes, at first glance Lençóis Maranhenses looks like an archetypal desert. In fact it isn't actually a desert. Between January and July the dune fields are flooded by a near infinite number of cold and crystal lakes. During these months it rains constantly and the soils become saturated and standing water accumulates on the surface, forming ponds up to 100 meters ( 300 feet ) wide, which merge with the perennial streams and lakes that dot the landscape.
